Wellness & Preventative Care

We recommend annual exams, vaccinations, dental care, and labwork as needed. Here are our recommendations based on age level.

Kittens can start their vaccinations and deworming as early as 8 weeks old. Vaccinations are repeated monthly until they are 16 weeks old, then given annually after that. Because kittens can have parasites and/or feline diseases passed down from their mother, we also deworm kittens, and test them for FeLV and FIV. FIP is another disease to be aware of, and testing is available if we see any sign of the illness.

Adult cats should be examined annually to look for potential issues, to continue their vaccinations, and to do routine lab testing as needed. Generally, indoor cats should receive FVRCP (aka "distemper") every 1-3 years, and Rabies annually. We only use the safest vaccines and vaccinate conservatively based on risk level. Cats who go outdoors, also receive their FeLV (Feline Leukemia) vaccination annually in addition to the indoor cat vaccinations.

Senior cats should have exams and labwork done at least once per year. Vaccinations are still given to our senior kitties, but they may be more spread out depending on their vaccination history and their risk level. Cats age much faster than we do, so it is important to try to catch problems early on so that we have time to manage them.
